Do you have a bakery we can visit?

While we do not allow clients to come to our kitchen, The Occasional Cake has an office in Brunswick, Maine where we can meet with you to design your wedding cake. If you'd like to schedule an appointment, please call or email.

18 Pleasant Street
Brunswick, Maine
207 373 9321

How do we go about choosing a design?

All of our cakes are custom designed. During the consultation, we'll discuss what type of design elements (colors, flowers, embellishments) you would like on your cake. We'll also discuss the colors of your wedding, theme, number of guests, location of reception etc. If you have cake photos that you like, we can use that as inspiration to create your cake.

What is your delivery area?

We are located in midcoast Maine. We will personally deliver and set up our wedding cakes anywhere in the USA or Canada for a charge of $0.49 per mile (round trip) from zip code 04011. Minimum charge for local set up is $50.00.

Do you provide cake samples?

Once you schedule an appointment you will be able to sample two cake flavors and three fillings at no extra cost. If you decide to sample more cakes you will be charged a small fee, which is then substracted from the final cost of your wedding cake order.

How do I secure my wedding date?

We require a deposit of 50% to reserve your wedding date. The balance is due 3 weeks prior to your event. Cancellation refunds will not be made within 6 weeks of wedding date.

When should I book my wedding cake?

We prefer that you book at least 6 months prior to the event. However, there are times when we have dates open so just give us a call or email us and we can check our schedule for availability.

I'm having an outdoor reception. Will the cake be okay?

Although fondant-covered cakes keep well in hot weather, the cake should not be set in direct sunlight. Not only can the icing underneath the fondant melt, the colors in the fondant can quickly fade. In the event of rainy or humid weather, fondant my be sticky and decorations may melt somewhat (even under a tent).

Do you offer cake decorating classes?

Yes! To learn more, click here.

How much do your wedding cakes cost?

Our pricing is based largely on the complexity of the design. Embellishments, such as sugar flowers and bows, will add to the price. Our base price for wedding cakes is $6.00 per slice, and cupcakes start at $4.00 each. Once you've had your consultation with us, we will be able to give you a firm price.

Do you bake your cakes from scratch?

Yes. All our cakes are made from scratch, meaning we do not use pre-made cake mixes. Our buttercream icing is an all butter-based icing, known as Italian Meringue buttercream. Our fillings are also created fresh from scratch, using fresh fruit, whenever possible. Our cakes are baked fresh for each wedding, never frozen.

What is fondant?

If you like candy, you'll love our homemade fondant! Fondant is a type of sugar dough that is rolled out and draped over a buttercream-iced cake and creates a porcelain-smooth finish. Fondant cakes can be embossed, imprinted, painted on and piped on with icing and can also be tinted any color. Fondant also keeps the cake moist. As with all our other components, we make our fondant from scratch. Unflavored, it tastes like marshmallow; but can be flavored to suit your taste (e.g. lemon, raspberry, apricot, mint, etc.) We also offer cakes covered in white or dark chocolate fondant. All our cakes are covered in fondant to give them an elegant, finished appearance.

What are gum paste flowers and how are they made?

Gum paste is a type of sugar dough that is used to form realistic flowers by hand. The flowers are then left to dry for a few days. Flowers can be made in any color, to suit your wedding's theme. Gum paste flowers can take weeks or months to complete depending on the type and amount of sugar flowers needed.

Do you provide fresh flowers?

If you prefer fresh flowers, order them from your florist so they match the rest of your wedding flowers. We will arrange the flowers on the cake at the time of set-up. If the flowers are not organically grown (pesticide free), we will place a protective layer under the flowers to protect your cake.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, personal checks, money orders, PayPal and cash. However, we cannot accept personal checks or PayPal within 3 weeks of your wedding date.
